Witches Beware! The 17th century was a time of great fear and superstition. It was a dark time of unexplained diseases, wars, and poverty. One group- of women- were frequent victims of this time period. They were thought to be the cause of the terrible illnesses...which resulted in their exile from society. The Salem Witch Trials exemplify how desperate people became in order to remove these witches from their lives. The film portrays the terror felt by the townspeople who resorted to brutal methods to find out if they have been harmed or bewitched by witchcraft. This paper will discuss the effects the witchcraft scare had on society. The societies age, class, and gender were affected by this event. This paper is divided into two main parts. The first being the causes of the witch hunt, and second being its effects. The causes include poverty, social discontent, injustice, religious fanaticism, and unscientific beliefs. All these conditions existed in Salem in 1692 when witchcraft hysteria began to run rampant. Most people were ignorant to these problems and were easily persuaded to fear those of witch craft simply because they believed in it. The problems that existed at the time were not being fixed, but worsened. The economic problems were caused by high taxes on imports, international trade disputes, and the poor management of American colonies. These conditions led to an increase of serfdom because many colonists were unhappy with their status. Serfdom was a condition in which people had to pay tribute to their owners, who could use it for his own needs. This system was also supported by English law. The social discontent within Salem town was caused by the protesting colonists who could not stand the way local officials handled issues that affected all residents of Salem village. These officials were paid by local taxes and dealt with all issues in a way that favored their own personal interests. The justice system was very unfair because the guilty faced no punishment, but the ones that were in the wrong suffered in a variety of ways. But when a girl was accused, no matter how innocent she was, she was treated harshly by the town officials. Many times she would be forced to confess, or else face torture or execution for crimes they did not commit. The religious fanaticism in Salem affected everyone's lives because of the witch hunt. Everyone who did not believe like many others did suffered heavy persecution and abuse because of their beliefs. The ignorance of people caused them to easily believe that the devil's work was what caused the bad things that were happening. People had no idea how they really worked, nor did they have science to help them understand what actually happened. It took awhile before anybody realized this was not a fact, but just mere speculation. Witchcraft fears were already present throughout New England, but they became even more common when Puritans arrived in 1630s. They believed in the existence of witchcraft and used it to explain misfortune or disease.
